Are you a light sleeper? Me not so much. But there are nights when I wake up for hours on end and then when I need to get up I’m exhausted. because I’ve fallen asleep minutes before I have to get up. Maybe you’re the type of person who when your head hits the pillow you’re out for the night? Do you feel there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish what you want or need to?
There’s now research that supports the idea that you might be able to train yourself to need less sleep.
Time Magazine recently featured an article with Jim Horne, a sleep expert and former director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University in England. Horne says it may be possible to teach yourself to sleep less. He argues the number of hours people need to sleep is more flexible from person to person and that concerns about not getting your nightly seven or eight hours are often overblown. Horne’s research shows that people can cut down their regular sleep to about six hours a night, plus a short nap during the day, as long as they do it gradually.
However, Dr. Daniel Buysse, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and a past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine says, “There are far more people who would like to need less sleep than who actually need less sleep.” (Time).
