When Sylvester Stallone recently shared a picture on Instagram of pro-wrestler Hulk Hogan hoisting him over his head during the filming of 1982’s ‘Rocky III’, the memories flooded back for the actor. And they were painful.
Not that Sly and the Hulkster aren’t good friends – they’ve been pals ever since. But as Stallone explains, a fact he rarely (if ever) has brought up until now, Hulk didn’t know his own strength and ended up putting THREE stuntmen in the hospital.
Fans will recall that Hogan portrayed heavyweight grappler Thunderlips in the third chapter in the ‘Rocky’ series, taking on Stallone’s Rocky Balboa in a charity ‘boxer v.s. wrestler’ bout. “Believe it or not, when Hulk jumped into the audience to fight with the stuntmen, three of them had to be treated at the hospital.” recalled Sly, who also directed the film. “He’s an amazing athlete.”
“I remember a violent move where he threw me into a corner, charged across the ring like an enraged bull and leaped so amazingly high above me, that his shinbone actually came down like a giant tree on my collarbone, and I tumbled to the floor.”
Stallone was sure he was injured, but luckily was – despite being a little battered and bruised – just fine.
“Hulk, if you’re reading this, it was a privilege to be mangled by such a gentlemen.”
With another ‘Expendables’ sequel in the works, Stallone’s latest action series which traditionally pits a throng of Hollywood action legends together on the same screen, this trip down memory lane would be the perfect transition to include Hulkster in the fun – thoughts? ~ Jason
