I see the cat’s thoughts progressing as follows: “Hello Human, I am enjoying what you are doing. Let me show you my gratitude by hitting you in the face with my head. Now, I will make it more challenging for you to do the thing that I enjoy you doing. Your ability to continue to perform to my standard of satisfaction will be directly related to how much afection I show you in the future.”
In my experience, cats come in one of three varieties:
- The super cute kitten style, that loves to play, and show affection
- The Mischief Maker, who knows what they’re doing is going is going to get them into trouble
- The Tolerator, sleeps most of the day, keeps select areas of the couch/bed warm, and allows you to be graced by their presence because they require food, or fresh litter. They tolerate your presence because you provide satisfactory food and shelter.
The Cat in this clip is of the first variety, and is really what every human is hoping for from a cat when they find one who will tolerate their human-ness. All signs on his Instagram account indicate that the the man playing piano in the clip is a “Crazy Cat Man.” Scrolling through his photos, it doesn’t take long to see that he regularly takes in strays, cleans them up, feeds them, and plays music for them.
My cat will approach the piano and try to jump on all the keys at once, scare himself, and then scamper off and hide because he doesn’t know what the hell just happened. Maybe I should watch this video with my cat – maybe it will help him understand what I’m looking for.
Watch the clip and see for yourself.
