Something tells me they’re enjoying more than a few shrimps on the barbie in the land down under.
A group of Australian’s have started a petition to replace ‘Advance Australia Fair, the official anthem that has been in place since 1977, with the Outkast hit, ‘Hey Ya’. And while only a handful of Australians signed it, the government has acknowledged it.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull responded in parliament this week. While the idea was nixed, Turnbull said that he “appreciates the important work of the Standing Committee on Petitions in putting community concerns before the Parliament.”
The rejection doesn’t change the song’s impact, though. Outkast’s ‘Hey Ya’ was a 2003 release which become a monster smash internationally for the Atlanta duo, peaking on not only the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 weekly chart, but hitting top spot in a number of countries including…..yep, Australia.
