Members of Sundance Taekwon-do in Vernon had big success at the 2017 International Taekwon-do Federation Canadian National Championships in Montreal on June 2 and 3.
The event featured over 450 competitors from all across Canada.
Sundance Taekwon-do sent a team of 7 competitors bringing home six medals.
“All of the members worked extremely hard in their preparations to bring in 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze,” says a club release.
The event also served as the selections to see who would be representing Canada at the upcoming International Taekwon-Do Federation World Championships in Ireland in October.
Two Sundance athletes qualified to represent Canada at the prestigious event.
Qualifying in Junior Girls Heavyweight sparring is Brianna Li, 14, with a silver medal. Also qualifying to represent Canada in Ireland is 17 year old Nicholas Tiourine who brought home the silver in Junior Boys Special Technique.
Competitors must place first or second to qualify for Ireland.
Instructor Andy Leung took home bronze in the men’s light heavyweight sparring category after pre-qualifying for the final round robin which put him up against several perennial champions in one of the toughest divisions of the championships.
In colour belt competition, Sundance had two competitors. Serena Apsassin, 10, won Gold in girls green belt sparring. Her younger sister Olivia, 8, took home a silver in yellow belt sparring an bronze in patterns.
Other competitors included Elyse Johnston who took 4th in Junior Girls Power Breaking and David White taking 4th in Men’s 4-6 Degree Patterns.
“This was a great showing by some of our most dedicated members, we couldn’t be more proud as a school and as a community” says David White, head coach and an International Instructor and Examiner with the International Taekwon-do Federation.
Sundance Taekwon-Do and its members are looking forward to several upcoming events including the Provincial Championships in September and the World Championships in Dublin, Ireland in October.
