What an extraordinary opportunity to get into the Scottish real estate market. I remember seeing one of these raffles not too long ago – they were raffling off a private island, that included a turn-key resort from what I remember. Apart from thinking it was extraordinary to win an island, the thought that it could be all mine for five or ten dollars was very intriguing. The only downside, was that I had missed the lottery deadline and wasn’t able to even have a shot.
Lucky for me – and you too, if you’re into that sort of thing – we haven’t missed the boat in on this 5000 square-foot, $625,000 home outside of Glasgow, Scotland. It has a pool, massive master bedroom, sauna, exercise facility, and more – all for £5. The story goes that the man who owns the house lost his job, and instead of letting the bank foreclose on the property, the family is going to raffle it off. They’ll pay out the mortgage and all the fees, then donate some to charity, and keep the rest. They’re trying to sell 250,000 tickets – if they don’t, the family who owns the house says they’ll extend the lottery deadline, or potentially do a draw for a cash prize.
There is something that feels a little scammy about it, but there sure is part of me that holds onto the dream of mortgage free property in Scotland for $10. You can read more about it here – and if you win, I’ll probably pop in for a visit.
