When you consider how we use whales as an anchor when we turn a phrase, it becomes pretty clear that they are big and heavy:
- Whale of a tale
- Like a beached whale
- Whale of a time
One would not expect something so big and heavy to be completely airborne at any point in their existence.
Craig Capehart is a scuba diver, Who was out with three of his scuba buddies were on the water for the “South African Sardine Run” off the southeastern coast of South Africa. The crew was out filming, not because they were interested in the sardines, but in the predators they attract. Instead of sardines, they got whales – including a humpback that cleared the surface of the ocean by a substantial amount.
It is not confirmed if this is the only footage of a humpback leaping entirely out of the water, but without a doubt, it is rare.
