You like cliches, kids? Get ready to go nuts.
As if the original ‘Nut Job’ wasn’t simplistically silly enough….if memory serves correct, the animated characters spent the majority of the film yelling at one another and passing gas….’The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature’ is worse. The plot is one big salute to banality, there’s nothing special or groundbreaking about the animation, and I’m hard pressed to find any reasons why this sequel was even necessary.
For those who didn’t have the pleasure of witnessing the first outing, ‘The Nut Job’ was about hungry vermin tunneling into a nut shop to replenish their stash. ‘Nutty By Nature’ finds the critters well fed and lazy, and a money-hungry mayor ready to destroy their idyllic home by building an amusement park. So the animals strike back by repeatedly sabatoging the building efforts, and…….
Well, that’s about it.
I’d love to say the whole thing is cute, and it has many charming moments. Unfortunately, save for a nifty cameo by Jackie Chan, there really aren’t many endearing slivers of fun to be had here. Vocal talent like Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl and Maya Rudolph just aren’t served the substance to deliver anything above average.
The best thing the team behind ‘The Nut Job 2’ can say is, their film isn’t the WORST animated feature of the summer. Thanks, ‘Emoji Movie’…
