An RCMP officer has been released from hospital after suffering non-life threatening injuries near the Tournament Inn early Saturday evening.
Kamloops RCMP say around 5:20 the officer noted a group of suspicious people in the parking lot and approached them to investigate. The officer then attempted to arrest one of the men, who pulled out a hand gun and fired shots at the officer.
The suspect fled the scene, and police are still looking for the man who is described as a white man with brown hair, standing 6’1” and weighing about 180 lbs. Kamloops RCMP don’t know if the suspect went into a room at the Tournament Inn or if he left the area.
The officer didn’t receive any gunshot wounds and was taken to a local medical facility but has since been released.
A Valleyview resident who lives nearby said shortly after police arrived on scene, he heard two loud bangs as a police officer approached a room with his gun drawn.
He said the officer walked back down the staircase and took cover behind his police car before grabbing either a shotgun or rifle. Shortly after hearing the loud bang, more police arrived. Witnesses said RCMP officers could be seen with rifles.
Kamloops RCMP still have a perimeter set up around the hotel and are searching the area for the suspect. They are asking the public to avoid the area. Kelowna ERT is on scene at the Tournament Inn.
