Incidents of vandalism and theft have the City of Vernon looking at options for its gateway signs at the entrances to the city.
The “Welcome to Vernon” signs on Highway 97 at the Watson House and Swan Lake were vandalized earlier this year, according to report to city council from Roy Nuriel, Economic development planner.
The LED lights and solar batteries at both sites were stolen, and the underground wires were severely damaged in January.
“Administration has asked the solar light company to provide an estimated cost for fixing the lights and is currently reviewing their proposal. As a result of the high value of the solar light parts, and concerns that this may happen again, Administration is exploring other alternatives to light the signs and secure the system,” writes Nuriel in his report to be discussed at Monday’s council meeting.
