You’ve probably heard that the colors inside a restaurant can impact how you feel, right? Well a new study finds that music might not only influence how you FEEL….but what you order.
University of South Florida researchers observed diners at a cafe in Stockholm. They divided the menu into different categories, and the findings were interesting to say the least.
20% of the restaurant’s customers ordered something unhealthy when exposed to louder ambient music, while those who dined during a quieter time preferred healthier choices. Study leader Dr. Dipayan Biswas says the volume and tempo of music influences a person’s heart rate and level of arousal, and so louder music increases stimulation and stress (long story short – gimmie a cheeseburger, hold the salad).
He adds, “Restaurants and supermarkets can use ambient music strategically to influence consumer buying behavior.”
There you have it – craving a pizza? Must be that AC/DC tune. ~ Jason
