While I’m often excited to see world class athletes do well at the things they do best, I find what is happening away from the sportsing action, way more interesting. Every athlete at the Olympics is a real person and real people have stress, but everyone manages it a little differently. Here we have examples from Finland and Switzerland, each of whom engage in ridiculous and/or interesting things to keep from cracking under pressure.
First up, the interesting team.
The Finnish team, to relieve stress, knits together. About half the team are knitting during the games in PyeongChang, tradition they began in Sochi. Last time they needed a scarf, and during these games, they are knitting a blanket for their presidential couples newborn son. The Finnish snowboard coach, Antti Koskinen, says “It’s a nice, Finnish thing… It means no unnecessary chit-chat is needed.”

Next up, the ridiculous team.
The Swiss freestyle skiing team has been making videos of the “Alternative Olympics“ and sharing them on Instagram. Events include, “The Pallet Pump Truck Run” which looks similar to a 2 person bobsled event, and “Escalator Aerials” which should certainly not be tried at home (because do you actually have an escalator at home?)

Regardless of how they execute, it sure looks like each of these teams it’s just working at keeping things light while the whole world is watching.
