As Canadians, we love our curling. We love our families. And we sure do love beer. And that, over the course of the PyeongChang Olympics, made Shawn Germain a bit of a national hero.
If you caught any of the women’s curling action during the games coverage, you no doubt saw Germain, Canadian curler Rachel Homan’s husband; he was the one usually pacing in the stands, nervously supporting his spouse and obviously using a little liquid courage to survive the stress. In one high-stakes game against Japan, he was double-fisting beers. And it was 9am in Korea.
Now, before you lecture the poor guy, check out Shawn’s tweet after that particular match…
“You can judge all you want. The stress level is high, I’m not a drunk. I’m just Canadian.” #WeBelieve
As a former EHCL hockey player, Germain is not stranger to competition….and very likely, no stranger to sipping on an ale or two to calm the jitters. Hey, he was there, each and every game, cheering on the love of his life in his own special way which was…..yup…..very Canadian.
Unfortunately, Homan and her team bowed out of medal competition with a loss to Great Britain. I’m going to miss the excitement of those games – just about every one of the showdowns were as tight as it gets. And you can bet I’m going to miss catching glimpses of this faithful fun. Cheers, bud! ~ Jason
