An early morning residential fire has claimed a life in Kelowna.
Crews responded to a fully engulfed house in the 2600 block of Springfield Road just after 5 this morning.
Police say a passerby spotted the blaze and took action, pulling into the driveway and honking his horn repeatedly to alert those thought to be sleeping inside.
“Witnesses at the scene have told police that four occupants, including a man, a woman and 2 children were observed fleeing from their home to safety,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “Investigators believe that the woman re-entered the residence for an unconfirmed reason. Tragically she was not seen re-exiting the home.”
The body of a deceased woman was located during a search of the residence.
“RCMP Victim Services were immediately engaged and continue to provide emotional support to the family,” says O’Donaghey.
Fire and police officials are investigating the cause.
