So much for basketball not being a contact sport…
A recent high school hoops game in Kansas took the usual bumping and bruising on the court to a whole new level. Centralia High’s Nathan Rempe was trying to chase down Thomas Atkins of Hanover, who was on a breakaway. Instead of conceding the two points, Rempe (probably letting his emotions get the better of him) gave a two-handed shove to Atkins while the player was in mid-air. Atkins – who still scored, by the way – crashed into the base of the basketball net, before crumpling to the floor.
See it here..
Rempe was issued a flagrant foul and……….nothing else. No ejection, no suspension, and nothing more than a simple flagrant. Granted, he received some harsh criticism once video of his actions went viral, with Sports Illustrated immediately calling it one of the most vicious fouls ever, and the Miami Heat’s Dwayne Wade branding Rempe “heartless”.
Here’s the good news; Atkins is okay. He even reported that Rempe apologized later on, and the two shook hands. Which is great, but……really, no suspension?? What do you think, is this one of the most horrific acts ever on the hardwood? Every kid should see this so they know what NOT to do when playing.
Oh, one more thing – Hanover won the game. So there ya go. ~ Jason
