There are bad ideas – and then, there’s this.
A video game set to be released next week allows players to simulate a school shooting. And if your jaw just dropped on that one, I get it – I had to read it twice to believe it.
Thankfully, the game is drawing such intense criticism, particularly in the wake of recent mass shootings at U.S. high schools, the launch is in jeopardy. In ‘Active Shooter’, players simulating a shooting in a school environment can choose to be either a SWAT team member or the shooter, and are shown ‘stats’ on how many civilians and police officers are killed.
Even the IDEA of such a game should make everyone ill.
Among the game’s critics are Ryan Petty and Fred Guttenberg, two fathers whose daughters were killed in February’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. ‘Active Shooter’ was developed by Revived Games and published by a Russian company called Acid, and is scheduled to be available on the gaming platform Steam, June 6th. That is, unless the outcry is so deafening, the makers have no choice but to pull it.
So, my advice? Have a voice in this. It’s stupid, it’s ill-advised, it’s toxic….and it’s just not right. ~ Jason
