Okay so how many of you have kids who are getting old enough for a cell phone? Let me re-phrase that, kids who think they’re old enough for a cell phone? Do you think you know what the best age is for your child to have an i-phone or other phone digital device? Perhaps you’re like me, a Mom who has a teenager with and i-phone and a tween who wants one?
This week I attended the very informative “Raising Digitally Responsible Youth” parent session at VSS. Robyn Boffy of Safer Schools Together shared ideas for parents who are dealing with the digital age.
VSS parents and all those who were there should be proud of themselves. They set a record for the most attendance at this particular talk, which has happened at several schools across the province.
During the discussion Robyn mentioned that the average teenager spends 9 hours EVERYDAY consuming media. Everything from Snapchat’s Snap Story, Bitmoji and Musically to Instagram, Youtube, Youtube kids, Live.ly, Sarahah and Kik, to Geo-locational dangers, video games such as Roblox and Minecraft, Vault Apps and Youth Lingo.
The following is a list of abreviations youth use on-line or “Youth Lingo”! Have you seen all of these before?
Apologies on the dimness of the above photos. I shot them from the screen presentation. Hopefully you can make out most of the lingo. If not you can find more details at saferschooltogether.com or click HERE
Spokesperson Robyn Boffy also suggested commonsense.org for ideas. The site even includes some comical video from Will Ferrell. To see the video click HERE
Robyn also shared some advice for parents on video with 1075 Beach Radio .
