The best of North Okanagan high school sports have been honoured at the 5th annual Rotary Athletic Awards, put on by the clubs in Vernon and Armstrong.
Twenty-five awards were handed out Tuesday night at the Vernon Lodge, including top male athlete to Isaac Olson of Fulton, and top female to Claire Oordt-Bosman of Vernon Christian School.
Event co-organizer Keith Johnston says it’s important to recognize the achievements of the student athletes.
“The reason I got it started is because I felt that the athletes weren’t being recognized enough, and particularly athletes that have to deal with academics as well as the sports, the combination of that. Rotary is strong into literacy and academics,” Johnston tells Beach Radio News.

Keegan Meise won the Patrick Nicol Booster award presented by Beach Radio, for his heart, kindness and grit in competing in volleyball for Fulton.
“An amazing young man,” says Johnston. “They said he was the heart and soul of the volleyball team at Fulton for the past several years. He didn’t get to play much due to limitations on size and health issues, but he was somebody who really was an inspiration to the team.”
Brent Gilchrist — who played 15 NHL seasons and won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 1998 — was the guest speaker, talking about the keys to being successful in sports and life.
Gilchrist grew up in Vernon, and now lives in Kelowna, and is president of JDS Resources Inc., an energy and mining company.
