Five local firefighters, members of the BX/Swan Lake and Armstrong fire departments and their structure protection unit, are assisting fire fighting efforts in the South Okanagan.
BX/Swan Lake Fire Chief Bill Wacey told Beach Radio News their 5-pack crew are engaging in structure protection and are a welcome sight especially to property owners concerned with potential fire damage. .
They go in ahead of the fire and set up fire protection around various structures that may sustain damage from the fire in the area.
The biggest challenge to the team is to establish an ember storm proof perimeter. In doing this they wet down the structures as well as raise the relative humidly to absorb any ember storm that may develop and cause damage to personal and public property.
Between the BX/Swan Lake and Armstrong departments, there are 16 personnel trained to operate the SPU, of which they have two complete units. One has remained back in the area for local protection
