University of Warwick researchers discovered that when they gave study participants 65 and up a drink containing a small amount of sugar, they experienced improved memory, mood AND concentration when completing a memory task, compared to those who drank a similar beverage made with artificial sweetener.
Participants ages 18 to 27 participated in the same test, though their mood and memory did not improve. The scientists say this finding is important because keeping the brain engaged with difficult tasks into old age is a way to stave off cognitive decline.
Bottom line? You don’t have to down a dozen donuts, but a pinch of sugar can’t hurt in the long run… 🙂 ~ Jason
