Auto crime has not taken a holiday over the summer around Vernon.
In fact, police say they’ve see a significant rise in theft from autos over the past few weeks, largely due to motorists leaving valuables in their vehicles.
Reported incidents are up 51% compared to last month, with thefts concurring day and night throughout the city.
Popular tourist spots are regular targets including Kin Beach, Kal Lake Park and Kekuli Bay Park.
Lumby also saw a spike with nine incidents reported over two weeks.
Smartphones, personal electronics, work tools and credit cards are the most common items stolen.
“The RCMP would like to remind motorists to not leave valuables in their vehicles, ensure all doors are locked and windows are rolled up,” says Cst. Kelly Brett.
“What thieves are looking for is opportunity. Vehicle owners are being cautioned to not leave themselves vulnerable to victimization.”
