Today is one of the smokiest days of the summer in Vernon, leading some people to wonder if there is a new wildfire in the area.
The good news is there isn’t a new fire.
Nicole Bonnett from the BC Wildfire Service says the smoke is a result of stagnant air.
“The smoke is just sitting in the valleys and over the lakes and things, so it looks like there is a lot of smoke, but it’s just a combination of all the fires burning in the province,” says Bonnett.
It will take some wind or precipitation to ease the smoky situation.
Bonnett says a website called firesmoke.ca provides a projection of where the smoke is coming from.
The air quality index for Vernon is near 8, which is high risk.
