An elderly woman is in hospital suffering from serious injuries, after being struck by a Red Buick Enclave while walking across Baron Road during the noon hour Friday, Kelowna RCMP reported.
Police believe the driver of the SUV was making a left hand turn onto Baron Road from Underhill Street, in heavy traffic, when the woman was hit.
Witnesses at the scene suggested that the woman landed on the hood of the SUV before falling under the vehicles tires, police said.
The 82-year-old Kelowna woman was conscious and breathing when officers arrived at the scene to assist. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
“RCMP would like to acknowledge the number of bystanders who jumped in to provide first aid to the injured woman, and keep her calm and as comfortable as possible while emergency medical crews responded to the scene,” stated Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, RCMP spokesperson.
A 48-year-old Alberta man, who remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, has been charged under the Provincial Motor Vehicle Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian.
