She was only scheduled to do a comedy sketch on ‘The Tonight Show’, but ended up bringing the house down with a rendition of a tune from one of her heroes.
Ariana Grande has displayed her vocal chops before, but never like this. Appearing on Jimmy Fallon’s late night program to promote her new album, producers asked Grande to perform a song by Franklin as a tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died Thursday at the age of 76. Earlier in the day, Grande had tweeted a photo of her with Franklin, noting “I say a little prayer..”
Reportedly, Grande had said she was too emotional to sing. However, Questlove persuaded her to perform “Natural Woman” with the Roots, the in-house band for the show. Fans don’t often get the chance to hear Grande sing classic soul, and her efforts provided more than an apt memorial to Franklin, a musical legend. After the final notes, and a standing ovation, Grande left the stage in tears.
