Aug 17 story:
Plans are underway to make room for a national new retailer in Vernon.
HomeSense will be opening in the North end, across from Best Buy and Value Village.
The City’s Economic Development Manager Kevin Poole says a development permit was issued in May.
“RioCan has come in and they’re proposing a 13,500 square foot addition to the 23,000 square feet they already had, into the parking lot area, so we have to realign some things.”
Poole says the building permit is valued at around three million dollars.
HomeSense sells off-price home furnishings, with 109 Canadian stores.
Meantime, Vernon is having a strong year in terms of new building activity.
Economic Development Manager Kevin Poole says 86 million dollars worth of building permits have been issued to the end of June.
“I don’t want to predict that it’s going to be a record year, but it’s going to be a very strong year with the amount of applications that we still have in.”
Poole says the most recent record is 170 million dollars in 2008.
He says most of the new development is on the residential side, particularly multi family projects.
Poole says there has been 283 new residential units created so far in 2018
