Back in the 80’s I was working at a radio station in Bathurst, New Brunswick, that previously staffed a well-known Canadian announcer Jake Edwards. You may know him as Brother Jake. Bathurst is tiny northern city. In it’s winters, it’s not uncommon to see snowmobiles driving through the main streets in the middle of the day, as well as at night.. So on those blistery stormy days, it was not uncommon for me to sleep at the radio station, but not before I listened to tunes when I got off the air! The station had thousands of ’45’s and albums in a music library. Much of the music did not get played on-air but the Program Director let us announcers go through and take what we wanted home. One album I picked out was from a Scottish band known as The Proclaimers! The album “This Is The Story” included songs such as “Throw The R Away” and “Letter From America”.

Twins Craig Reid and Charles Reid were born in Leith, Scotland, with Edinburgh as their home base. They’re voices are memorable! You’ll agree if you take in their concert.
In 1988 they released “I’m Gonna Be 500 Miles” and then “I’m On My Way” from their second album “Sunshine On Leith”. Then in 1993 “I’m Gonna Be 500 Miles” was re-released and gained major success as it was part of the Johnny Depp “Benny & Joon” soundtrack.
“Sunshine On Leith” became a stage musical in 2007 and later was made into a movie of the same name in 2013.
The Proclaimers are at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre tomorrow night at 7:30 PM. The Brian Martin Show with Jen Bailey gave away some tickets for the show this morning. 1075 Beach radio listener/texter/facebook Mary-Anne Schmidt won tickets today on the mid-day. She plans to take her daughter to the show. Jason Armstrong has a chance for you to win as well this afternoon.
