To be blunt, NFL player Zane Gonzales had a very, very bad day at the office on Sunday.
The Cleveland Browns’ place kicker missed two of his field goal attempts and both of his extra point tries as his team fell to the New Orleans Saints by three points, extending Cleveland’s massive losing streak. (The Browns are 1-32-1 since the start of the 2016 season). So….yes, leaving eight points on the field is a pretty big deal in Cleveland.
Still, you’ve gotta feel for the guy. And, predictably, Gonzales was roasted by fans at the game (and later on social media), leaving him visibly devastated.
Enter his rival….
Saints’ kicker Will Lutz, who ultimately sealed the game for New Orleans with his own successful field goal, tracked down the sophomore player on the Browns’ sideline and sought to console Gonzales. Here’s a quick look at Lutz’s selfless act..
He certainly didn’t have to do that. He could’ve joined the celebration with his fellow players. Yet, he made it a point to give his opponent a lift. Lutz gave a little perspective later in the afternoon on Twitter; “At the end of the day, it’s not ‘just a game’ to us, this is our livelihood,” he said. “Our careers rely on personal performance, as does everyone else’s. I will never pull for someone to fail, as I know, I will, too. I hope to see nothing more than Zane to have an amazing career going forward.”
That’s sportsmanship, my friends. And a good example for every one of us, in athletics AND in life. 🙂 ~ Jason
