Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick is putting together his re-election campaign as he faces a competitor in this year’s civic election.
Former councillor Bill Firman jumped into the race just before nominations closed Friday afternoon. saying he felt a Mayor needed to be elected, not acclaimed.
Garlick is fine with that.
“It gives people a choice and I guess Mr. Firman’s feeling is he doesn’t like the idea of a person just getting in without having to run through an election without putting his name forward. I just hope that he wants the job.”
Garlick says he’s happy to take part in any forums that may be set up and plans to talk to as many people as he can to explain his position on issues facing the community.
One of those is the proposed new cultural centre which he hopes will draw people on election day.
“You want people to actually come out and register their thoughts on that, whether they’re for it or against it.”
Garlick says people need to show up and not assume it’s a done deal.
