An elementary school in Nanaimo is under fire after parents on social media shared photos of an outdoor classroom that is being nicknamed “the cage”.
Departure Bay School is awaiting a portable, but in the meantime they have converted an outdoor storage area to fit the needs of a classroom. The school does have Eco-School Academy status, meaning that outdoor learning is part of the curriculum, but some parents are less than satisfied with the situation.
After the backlash, a statement from the school on Wednesday says: “There are now indoor spaces for the classes at all times with minimal movement. The outdoor classroom area is now ready for classes to use at their own discretion.”
