The Eagles have one. The 76ers have one. And now…finally….Philadelphia’s NHL team, the Flyers, have their very own mascot. One that captures the toughness and intensity of the city and its fans.
The trouble is, ‘Gritty’ is inevitably going to horrify children. Shoot, I’m 48 years old, and I find the dude awfully scary.
‘Gritty’ was introduced by the Flyers this morning (Monday). A 7-foot tall, fuzzy, orange creature, he made his debut at the city’s Please Touch Museum, and will make his first appearance for the team tonight at the Wells Fargo Center when the Flyers take on the Boston Bruins in exhibition play.
What do you think? Is Gritty a little…….uh……imposing??
By the way, the Flyers DID have a mascot once before, back in 1976, called Slapshot. He was gone in less than a year. Should Gritty be the source of a few nightmares, he might be following Slapshot out the door.. ~ Jason
