You might not know him if he were to pass you on the street, but make no doubt about it, Caroll Spinney is a very important figure in the entertainment industry. Spinney has announced his retirement, and while he isn’t necessarily a household name, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t know him for the beloved character he has portrayed for close to five decades..
Spinney is the puppeteer behind Big Bird from Sesame Street.
“I plan to be an ambassador for Sesame Workshop for many years to come,” the 84-year old shared. “After all, we’re a family!”
Spinney, who was also the puppeteer for Oscar The Grouch, promises Sesame Street fans that both the beloved bird and lovable garbage can curmudgeon will be in good hands. “It’s time for two performers that I have worked with and respected – and actually hand picked for the guardianship of Bird Bird and Oscar – to take my alter-ego’s into their hands and continue to give them life.”
Spinney has worked with ‘Sesame Street’ since its 1969 debut. Let’s hope the dude isn’t going home to an ’empty nest’. (…sorry, I couldn’t resist!) ~ Jason
