Police in Vernon have arrested a prolific offender who they say took the bait — a bait car to be more specific.
Officers were called to West Vernon Sunday where a man allegedly used a screwdriver and rock try try and steal a specialized designed bait car.
A 37 year old suspect was arrested after a short foot chase though a creek.
Darcy Every has been charged with theft of motor vehicle and two other offences, possession of break and enter tools, and obstruct police officer.
“This is the second foot chase in a week that Members have been involved in where suspects have attempted to evade police by entering water,” says RCMP spokesperson Kelly Brett.
Brett says Every is a well-known prolific offender with a lengthy criminal record for vehicle thefts and other property related offences.
“In any given community, prolific offenders account for 80 percent of all crime committed.”
“The Bait Car program has been very successful throughout British Columbia,” says Inspector Brian MacDonald, the Officer in charge of IMPACT- BC’s Auto Crime Police. “We are putting would be thieves on notice that Bait Cars are everywhere and you will go to jail.”
