Vernon RCMP are working on how to dispose of the dangerous drug – fentanyl – when it is seized from drug dealers.
The powerful opioid is often mixed with other drugs such as heroin and cocaine and has led to a crisis on the streets.
“With the fentanyl crisis, we’ve had to look at how to destroy our drug exhibits,” Supt. Shawna Baher told city council. “We are now not allowed to take our drug exhibits to destroy.”
Baher (pictured) said police are currently looking at the safety and effectiveness of a machine that costs about $7,500.
She said there was increased enforcement in Vernon targeting drug traffickers.
