Go ahead and give that special someone something you think they’ll really, really love this Christmas – it will make you feel good.
University of Chicago researchers gave 96 participants in a recent study a certain amount of money each day, with instructions to either spend it on themselves OR spend it on someone else. All participants were asked about their happiness levels, both before and after the experiment.
Those who spent money on themselves reported their happiness level gradually went down over the five year period, but those who gave their money to someone else said the feel-good factor stayed strong the whole time.
Study leader Dr. Ed O’Brien adds, “If you want to sustain happiness over time, past research tells us that we need to take a break from what we’re currently consuming and experience something new. Our research reveals that the kind of thing may matter more than assumed – repeated giving, even in identical ways to identical others, may continue to feel relatively fresh and relatively pleasurable the more that we do it.” ~ Jason
