I have never given my kid’s allowance. And I’m not sure why. I received an allowance as a kid. It was like a pay cheque for a job. I did daily chores, made my bed, washed the dishes, set the table and I was paid. I used the money to buy treats or saved it for special toys I wanted. I also didn’t have much in the way of treats or toys when I was a child.
My kids are now too old for an allowance, and I really feel it didn’t hurt them not receiving an allowance. Both of my kids saved their money they received for birthdays and Christmas. Both kids did chores when I asked them. And both kids would ask for things if they wanted. They wouldn’t always get it, mostly because I couldn’t afford all the extras when they were younger.
Apparently, my NO allowance policy is not normal. Most North Americans DO give their kid’s allowance. A new survey f found that 69 percent of parents gave a regular allowance last year, with an average amount of $9.06 a week. Do you give your kid’s allowance? How much?
